Oamaru is home to two penguin colonies, the Little Blue and the Yellow-eyed, the Blue being the smallest but common, the yellow being shy and rare. Last night we went to a public viewing of the Little Blues returning from the ocean after a day’s fishing, 150 of the little blokes in waves of small groups. Penguins may have outnumbered the people watching but not by much. This morning we rose before dawn and went for a more intimate, if more distant viewing of the yellows going to sea. Look carefully, you can see them in the pictures. We also saw chicks just a few yards from us nestled in the shrubs on the cliff wall.
